What are local SEO strategies?

Look, I get it. You’re running a local business and everyone keeps telling you “you need SEO” but nobody’s explaining what the heck that actually means for someone targeting customers in your neighborhood.

Let me break this down for you like we’re having coffee.

## **First Things First – Google My Business is Your Best Friend**

Seriously. If you do nothing else after reading this, go claim your Google My Business listing. Right now. I’ll wait…

This free tool is literally the difference between showing up when someone searches “plumber near me” and being invisible. Fill out every single field. Upload photos. Get your hours right. Add your services. The whole nine yards.

## **Your Website Needs to Scream Your Location**

Here’s what kills me – businesses spend thousands on a website then forget to mention where they actually are! Your city, suburb, state needs to be:

– In your page titles
– In your headings
– Sprinkled naturally through your content
– In your footer
– On every. single. page.

Don’t just say “Best Plumber” – say “Best Plumber in Bondi” or wherever you are.

## **NAP Consistency (No, Not Sleep Time)**

NAP = Name, Address, Phone number

This needs to be EXACTLY the same everywhere online. And I mean exactly. If you use “St” on your website, don’t use “Street” on Facebook. Google’s watching, and inconsistency confuses them.

Check these places:
– Your website
– Google My Business
– Facebook
– Instagram
– LinkedIn
– Yellow Pages online
– Any directory you’re listed in

## **Reviews Are Gold – Start Mining**

You know what beats fancy SEO tricks? Real reviews from real customers.

Ask for them. Every time. Make it stupid easy – send a link, put a QR code on your receipt, whatever works. Respond to every review, good or bad. Show Google you’re active and you care.

## **Local Content That Actually Matters**

Stop writing generic blog posts about “10 tips for choosing a plumber”. Nobody cares.

Write about:
– That charity event you sponsored in your suburb
– The specific plumbing issues in older homes in your area
– Local water restrictions and what they mean
– Case studies from actual local jobs (with permission)

Be useful to YOUR community.

## **Get Listed Everywhere That Matters**

There’s a bunch of local directories still kicking around. Yeah, some feel ancient, but they still count:

– Yelp
– True Local
– Hotfrog
– Word of Mouth
– StartLocal
– Your local chamber of commerce site
– Industry-specific directories

Just remember – NAP consistency!

## **Mobile or Die**

Over half your local searches happen on phones. If your site takes 10 seconds to load or people need a magnifying glass to read it on mobile, you’re done.

Test your site on your phone. Get your mate to test it. Get your mum to test it. If any of them struggle, fix it.

## **Build Local Links (The Right Way)**

Forget buying dodgy backlinks. Build real relationships:

– Sponsor local sports teams
– Join business associations
– Partner with complementary local businesses
– Get featured in local news sites
– Guest post on local blogs

Real relationships = real links = real results.

## **Schema Markup (Stay With Me)**

Ok this one’s a bit technical but hear me out. Schema is basically a way to spoon-feed Google information about your business. It helps you show up with those fancy stars, business hours, and other info right in search results.

Get your web person to add local business schema. It’s worth it.

## **Track What Actually Matters**

Stop obsessing over rankings for random keywords. Track:
– Calls from Google My Business
– Direction requests
– Website visits from local searches
– Actual leads and sales

If the phone’s ringing, you’re winning.

## **The Bottom Line**

Local SEO isn’t rocket science. It’s about making it brain-dead easy for people in your area to find you when they need you.

Start with Google My Business. Fix your NAP. Get reviews. Create local content. Build real relationships.

Do these things consistently and you’ll smoke competitors who are still paying for Yellow Pages ads.

Now stop reading and go claim that Google My Business listing. Seriously. Go.
